Obesity (General Info, News and Resources)

Obesity Action Coalition The OAC is a 50,000 member-strong 501(c)(3) National non-profit organization. The mission of the OAC is to elevate and empower those affected by obesity through education, advocacy and support. The OAC is near and dear to my heart. I am a proud member and I am currently serving on the OAC National Board of Directors.

Become a member ($20/year)  I encourage everyone who is/has been affected by obesity to join. You get a great magazine mailed to your house too. FYI: You do NOT have to be a member to attend any OAC events or utilize their FREE resources but it's a great way to pay it forward.

The Your Weight Matters Challenge (brought to you by the Obesity Action Coalition) - Is a national campaign encouraging people to have a chat with their doctor about their weight and health, taking the important first step. You can choose to download the FREE Your Weight Matters Challenge Campaign Toolkit or have it mailed to you free of charge and sign up to receive the e-newsletter that is sent at the beginning of each week. Comes in English & Spanish.

Common Questions To Ask Your Bariatric Surgeon Before Having Weight-Loss Surgery

  • What types of weight-loss operations do you perform? (should be more than one, don't let anyone sell you a particular type of surgery, make sure it suits your lifestyle and current health concerns.)
  • Which weight-loss surgery procedure is best for me?
  • How many of each weight-loss surgery procedure have you performed?
  • What are the risks involved with weight-loss surgery?
  • How long will I be in surgery?
  • What is the length of my hospital stay for my weight-loss surgery procedure?
  • How long will it be before I can return to pre weight-loss surgery levels of activity? work? driving? exercise and umm other activities?
  • How will my eating habits change after weight-loss surgery?
  • What are the typical excess weight loss and improvement of associated health conditions for your other patients?
  • Do you have patients who are willing to share their weight-loss surgery experiences, both positive and negative?
  • What information can you give me to help family and friends better understand this surgery?
  • What type of long-term, aftercare services (such as support groups and counseling) can you provide for me post weight-loss surgery? (This is soooo important, run if they offer nothing)

I am happy to share my Medical Tourism experience just drop me a line. Archived posts from those years are around if you dig a bit (drop down screen on left.) Nutrition

What's the nutritional value on (insert Eggface recipe)?
I don't put the nutritional info on my recipes because frankly, that can vary so widely. I use full-fat cheeses (the good stuff) others may use low fat or (horror) non fat, the % fat on beef, turkey, differences in packaged products, brands of protein, etc. will change the info dramatically. Also serving size will vary depending on how far from surgery you are. Portions for each stage should be determined by your medical posse.

What I do when I need to find the nutrition info (on my recipes or any other) is go to a site like (fitday.com, nutritiondata, sparkpeople, etc. or Google search: Recipe Calculator) type in each individual ingredient, this will give you cals, carbs, fats, protein gram totals, then divide those totals by the # of servings you get from the dish. It's not exact but it's close enough for me.

When in doubt... print it out and bring the recipe to your Dr. or nutritionist for their thumbs up. I am pretty low carb, moderate fat, high protein and I am honored that many bariatric practices use my web site as a patient resource but again when in doubt, print it out and get your OK from your medical posse.
